Municipal Climate Action

I formed and led the first Climate Action Team at the City of New Westminster. This was a fun and challenging undertaking. This video answers some of the questions people might have, such as how this work was initiated, how we changed the climate of the organization, and what were our first steps of action.

Cities and Equity

This video draws from a talk I gave that frames city planning as an act of hope and community-building. I explore the history of urban planning, highlight its aspirational dimensions, and call for justice-oriented, inclusive planning that prioritizes equity, diversity, and human connection. Individuals and communities must engage with urban planning as a collective, ethical endeavour to create cities that reflect our shared values.

Planners Exercising Our Power

This video draws from a documentary that was made in relation to the advent of Climate Action Charters in British Columbia. This excerpt from the interview outlines a position I have often expounded that planners cannot shirk our authority. We need to embrace our responsibility, framing issues and providing recommendations in ways that advance climate action, social equity, and improved city planning.

PIBC Welcome awards

For many years before I became the President of the Planning Institute of British Columbia, I chaired the PIBC Awards and Recognition Committee. We have always had the opportunity to celebrate award winners at annual galas but in 2020 we had to cancel our annual conference and our awards ceremony. We shifted gears. I am welcoming people to our online awards ceremony in this video.

Public Safety

This video draws from a talk I gave about gender and planning, which explores the need for safer, more inclusive cities for women, drawing on personal experiences and advocating for urban planning through a lens of radical inclusion. Highlighting systemic barriers, I call for collective action to create equitable spaces that benefit everyone.

Joint Municipal City Planning

I led the first joint official community planning process ever undertaken in the province of British Columbia (or further afield?). It won a lot of attention and some awards. This video draws from a Q+A that occurred following the completion of that project.

Pay attention to the site and make intelligent design decisions

I led the first joint planning process in the province, and in my role as Deputy Director of Planning for the City of Langford, I also managed a lot of the environmental and design review. Our design guidelines and regulations were amended to ensure that intelligent design decisions could be supported.
